Privacy Policy · Redac Marker

Redac Marker does not collect any data.

Last updated: May 22, 2026

What this policy covers

This policy applies to Redac Marker, our iOS app available on the App Store. It does not cover the Redac macOS app or the Redac website. Those products handle accounts, billing, and API keys, and have a different privacy footprint.

If you use only Redac Marker, this page is the complete picture.

The short version

Redac Marker runs entirely on your iPhone. It does not have a login, an account, an API key, or a backend. We have no servers that receive anything from your device. We have no analytics SDKs. We have no third-party SDKs of any kind. We do not see what you redact, that you redacted, or that you use the app.

The App Privacy nutrition label on the App Store reflects this literally: Data Not Collected.

What the app reads from your device

Redac Marker reads files you explicitly hand to it — through the photo picker, the document scanner, or the iOS share sheet — and processes them on-device. Specifically:

  • Photos and screenshots you select via the iOS photo picker.
  • PDFs and images you open from Files or share into the app from another app.
  • Live captures from the camera when you use the built-in document scanner. Scans are processed in memory and never written to a location outside the app’s sandbox unless you explicitly save them.

All processing happens locally. None of these files, or any metadata about them, are transmitted anywhere by the app.

How detection works

To find personal information, Redac Marker uses a stack of on-device detectors:

  • Optical character recognition via Apple’s Vision framework, locally.
  • Pattern detectors — regular expressions and Apple’s NSDataDetector — for things like phone numbers, emails, and card numbers.
  • Named-entity recognition via Apple’s Natural Language framework, locally.
  • Face detection via Apple’s Vision framework, locally.
  • Apple Intelligence (Foundation Models), running locally on supported devices, for context-aware composite PII like addresses and mixed name-and-date-of-birth combinations.

Apple’s frameworks run on your device. The detectors do not send your content to Apple, to us, or to any third party.

iOS permissions

When you first use a feature that needs access, iOS asks for your permission. The app uses:

  • Photo Library (read) — to let you pick a photo or screenshot to redact.
  • Photo Library (write) — to save the redacted output back to your library when you ask.
  • Camera — to capture documents with the built-in scanner.

You can revoke any of these in iOS Settings at any time. Redacting a file you already picked or scanned does not need network or any further system permission.

The share extension

Redac Marker includes a share extension labelled Redact that appears in the iOS share sheet for images and PDFs. The extension runs in its own sandboxed process and follows the same rules as the main app: on-device processing, no network, no analytics. The only data shared between the main app and the extension is the optional custom vocabulary you choose to maintain — kept in a private App Group container that no other app can read.

Third parties

We use no third-party SDKs, no analytics services, no advertising networks, no crash reporters of our own, and no cloud services. The app links only against Apple’s own frameworks.

What Apple sees

When you download an app from the App Store, Apple receives the transaction. If you opt in to share anonymized device analytics with Apple in iOS Settings, Apple may collect crash and usage diagnostics across your device and may show developers aggregate reports. We may see those aggregate reports for Redac Marker. They do not contain anything you redacted, anything from your files, or anything tied to your identity.

You can change what Apple shares with developers in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

Children

Redac Marker is rated 4+. It contains no advertising, no third-party content, and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Redac Marker handles data, we will update this page and update the Last updated date above. For material changes — for example, if a future version were to introduce any data collection at all — we will document it in the App Store release notes for that version, so you can decide before updating.
